Håndplukkede druer i små plastic kasser. 100% fodtrådt i lagares. Tilsat gær og ved 8º
Baumé blev der tilsat brandy. Vinen blev tappet uden nogen klaring eller filtrering efter to års lagring.

You have to wonder if the 2004 vintage for Port would have been declared if 2003 didn't exist. I tasted a small range of 2004 VPs, and I found many outstanding wines, including Quinta do Crasto, Quinta do Noval, Taylor Fladgate Quinta de Vargellas Vinha Velha and Warre Quinta da Cavadinha.

In the 2004 vintage, most Port houses preferred to bottle single-quinta wines sourced from individual vineyards or grape farms in the Douro Valley, Portugal's delimited vineyard area for Port. Either for reasons of quality or quantity, they deemed 2004 unsuitable for a general declaration of the vintage. The last generally declared vintage was 2003.

The 2004 season was the opposite of the boiling 2003, with a lot of rain during August, a crucial month in the growing season. Luckily, it was cooler than normal, and rot in the vineyard never completely took hold. Growers who held on and didn't pick early in September found themselves with beautiful, warm and clear weather for most of the month. This Indian summer produced excellent grapes in many vineyards.

This is why I found most of the 2004 vintage Ports less concentrated than the 2003s or 2000s, the next most recently declared vintage. They have wonderful, subtle perfumes and balanced, sweet and refined palates. These are not vintage Ports for long-term aging and will give much pleasure early in their evolution. I think the best will be very drinkable seven to eight years from now some even before.

QUINTA DO CRASTO Vintage Port 2004

Gorgeous aromas of pepper, spices, chocolate and crushed fruit. Full-bodied, medium sweet and very, very chewy, with a solid core of fruit. Has ripe tannins and lots of grip. One of the best ever from this producer. Best after 2015. -J.S.
